10 Biblical Prayers to Pray Over Your Teen

As a mom of a teenager you want to encourage them. You want to guide them. You want to protect them from making choices they’ll regret. And more than anythiything you want them to know and follow Jesus for themselves.

But you can’t always be with them. And you can’t make their choices for them.

That is one of the reasons prayer has to be such an important part of motherhood.

Sometimes my prayers for my boys are long and specific. Other times they’re as simple as, “Lord, please give him wisdom today.”

And honestly? I think that’s okay.

We don’t need fancy words when we pray. We can simply open our Bibles, find a verse that speaks to what we’re asking God for, and turn that Scripture into a prayer.

So if you’re wondering what to pray over your teenager, here are 10 biblical prayers you can use as a starting point.

1. A Prayer for Your Teenager to Know Jesus

Bible verse: Romans 10:9

Lord, I pray that [name] would come to know You personally and trust in Jesus. Give them a heart that seeks You and a faith that is their own. Help them understand who You are and desire to follow You—not simply because of what they’ve been taught, but because they have come to know You for themselves. Amen.

This is one of the prayers I come back to again and again.

As moms, we can teach our children about Jesus, take them to church, read the Bible with them, and encourage them in their faith. But ultimately, their relationship with God is theirs.

We can’t choose faith for them.

We can pray.

2. A Prayer for Wisdom and Good Decisions

Bible verse: James 1:5

Father, please give [name] wisdom when they don’t know what to do. Help them slow down, seek You, listen to wise counsel, and think carefully before making decisions. Give them discernment as they navigate friendships, school, relationships, work, and all the choices that come with growing up. Amen.

Teenagers have a lot of decisions coming their way.

Some are little and some can have consequences that follow them for years.

I love the simplicity of James 1:5 because it reminds us that we can ask God for wisdom. That’s something I want my boys to learn to do for themselves—not just while they’re teenagers, but for the rest of their lives.

3. A Prayer for Your Teenager’s Friendships

Bible verses: Proverbs 13:20; 1 Corinthians 15:33

Lord, please surround [name] with good friends who encourage them to make wise choices and who point them toward You. Give them discernment about the people they spend their time with. Help them also be the kind of friend who is kind, loyal, honest, and encouraging. Amen.

Friendships matter so much during the teenage years.

And as moms, this can be one of the hardest things to let go of.

We can’t choose our teenager’s friends. We won’t always like every person they spend time with. But we can pray that God gives them wisdom about their friendships and helps them recognize what a healthy, godly friendship looks like.

And I think it’s just as important to pray that our teenagers become good friends themselves.

4. A Prayer for Your Teenager’s Character

Bible verse: Galatians 5:22-23

Lord, grow Your fruit in [name]’s life. Help them become a person who is loving, patient, kind, gentle, faithful, and able to practice self-control. When they make mistakes, give them humility to admit them and courage to make things right. Amen.

Of course I want my boys to do well in school, find meaningful work, and make good decisions.

But at the end of the day, I care much more about the kind of men they’re becoming.

Grades, jobs, accomplishments, and awards are wonderful things, but character will follow them everywhere.

5. A prayer for Your Teenager’s Courage

Bible Verse: Joshua 1:9

Lord, when [name] feels nervous, unsure, or afraid, remind them that they don’t have to face every situation alone. Give them courage to stand up for what is right, even when it isn’t popular. Help them be willing to follow You when the crowd is going in another direction. Amen.

Being a teenager can take courage.

There will be moments when your son or daughter has to decide whether to go along with everyone else or make a different choice.

I want my boys to know that courage doesn’t mean never being afraid. Sometimes courage simply means doing what is right even when it’s hard.

6. A Prayer for Protection Over Your Teenager

Bible verses: Psalm 121:7-8; Psalm 91:4

Father, I pray for [name]’s protection as they go about their daily life. Watch over them when they’re driving, traveling, at school, at work, with friends, and wherever they may go. Give them wisdom to make safe and responsible choices, and help them remember to look to You. Amen.

This is one of those prayers that comes very naturally as a mom.

Especially when your teenager starts driving, staying out later, working, traveling, and becoming more independent, it’s easy to realize just how little control we actually have over everything that happens outside our home.

That’s when I find myself praying, “Lord, please watch over him.”

7. A Prayer for Your Teenager When They’re Tempted

Bible verse: 1 Corinthians 10:13

Lord, when [name] is tempted to make a choice they know isn’t right, help them recognize temptation and choose a better path. Give them wisdom to step away from situations that could lead them into sin. Help them remember the truth of Your Word and give them the courage to make the right choice. Amen.

Our teenagers are going to face temptation. We don’t have to pretend otherwise.

Rather than only praying that our kids will never encounter difficult situations, I want to pray that they will know God’s Word, recognize temptation, and learn how to make wise choices when those moments come.

And when they do mess up—and they will—my prayer is that they will know they can come to us and, more importantly, come to God.

8. A Prayer for Your Teenager’s Purity

Bible verses: Psalm 119:9-11; Philippians 4:8

Lord, help [name] guard their heart and mind. Give them wisdom about what they watch, listen to, read, and allow into their lives. Help them think about things that are true, honorable, pure, and pleasing to You. Give them the strength to turn away from things that aren’t good for them. Amen.

This is a prayer I believe is especially important in today’s world.

Our teenagers have access to more information, entertainment, and opinions than we ever did growing up.

We can’t possibly monitor or know every single thing they will encounter.

9. A Prayer for Your Teenager’s Future

Bible verse: Proverbs 3:5-6

Lord, help [name] trust You as they make decisions about their future. When they aren’t sure which direction to take, remind them to seek You instead of relying only on their own understanding. Guide their steps and help them trust You one decision at a time. Amen.

I don’t know about you, but thinking about my boys’ futures can make me feel all kinds of things.

Where will they live?

What will they do?

Who will they marry?

What kind of men will they become?

There are so many things I want to know, and so many things I simply can’t know yet.

That’s why Proverbs 3:5-6 is such a good reminder for me as a mom. I don’t have to know every detail of my children’s future to pray for them and trust God with it.

10. A Prayer for Your Teenager to Follow God’s Ways and Will for Their Life

Bible verse: Psalm 119:105

Father, let Your Word be a lamp for [name]’s feet and a light for their path. Help them turn to Scripture when they need direction. Give them a desire to know Your Word and the wisdom to live according to it. When they make mistakes, gently lead them back to You. Amen.

More than anything, I want my boys to know where to turn when they don’t know what to do.

I won’t always have the right answer for them.

There will be decisions they make that I can’t make for them, situations I can’t fix, and questions I can’t answer.

But God’s Word will always be something they can turn to.

And that’s one of the greatest things I can pray for: that my children would learn to seek God and His Word for themselves.

Don’t Forget to Pray for Yourself Too

It’s easy to spend all our prayer time asking God to help our children.

But motherhood has reminded me over and over that I need prayer, too.

So while you’re praying for your teenager’s wisdom, pray for your own.

While you’re praying for their patience, pray for yours.

While you’re asking God to help them make wise decisions, ask Him to give you wisdom about when to speak, when to listen, when to set a boundary, and when to simply let go.

Lord, give me wisdom as I parent [name]. Help me know when to speak and when to be quiet. Help me lead with patience and grace. Give me discernment, humility, and courage. When I’m worried about my child, help me remember that You love them even more than I do. Teach me to trust You with the things I cannot control. Amen.

That last part is sometimes the hardest one for me.

Trusting God with our children doesn’t mean we stop caring or stop praying. It means we remember that we were never meant to carry the responsibility for their entire future on our own.

You Don’t Have to Pray the Perfect Prayer

Let’s be real, prayer doesn’t always come naturally. If you’ve ever felt like you aren’t praying enough, praying the right way, or saying the right things for your teenager, take a breath.

You don’t need a perfect prayer.

You don’t need an hour-long prayer time every morning.

Here’s what I’ve learned over time — as my relationship with the Lord grew deeper, so did my prayers. I began to realize it wasn’t about having the perfect words; it was about bringing my honest heart to Him.

A big turning point for me was reading Praying the Scriptures for Your Children by Jodie Berndt. That book helped me understand that I could literally pray the Bible — word for word — and trust that God’s promises would go to work in my child’s life.

Open your Bible.

Pick a verse.

Say your teenager’s name.

And talk to God.

Some days your prayer might be a few sentences while you’re making dinner. Other days you may have much more to say.

Either way, keep showing up.

And when you don’t know what else to say, let God’s Word give you the words.

Start with one verse. Start with one prayer. And keep going.

A Personal Note From One Mama to Another

When our third baby was born, I started journaling my prayers for him in a Bible I plan to give him one day. In it are my hopes for his future, favorite verses, and the moments I cried out to God on his behalf. It’s become one of my most treasured things.
