Encourage Yourself in The Lord Quotes

Sharing is caring!

Today I am sharing a very personal story. You might be able to relate to it or you might not. But the end reason for sharing it, is that you will be able to encourage yourself in the Lord during your own times of turmoil, fear, and anxiety.

The week before Christmas, my fifty-six year “young” beautiful mom had a stroke.

My family and I were about four hours away from home, for a high school basketball tournament my son was in. We received a phone call early Saturday morning letting us know my mom was taken by ambulance to the hospital for stroke-like symptoms.

I didn’t really believe it was a stroke because she is so young. We had no warning. I had spoken to her on the phone just two days earlier and had been texting her the night before. She was fine!

The weeks leading up to the stroke she mentioned a couple of times she wasn’t feeling very well. A headache or two, and was feeling a bit stressed with work and the responsibility of taking care of her elderly mother. But nothing that really screamed for attention.

But in just one night everything changed. We went from eagerly awaiting Christmas to get here, to wondering if she would ever walk or talk again. The days following my mom’s stroke were full of uncertainty.

She spent five long days in the Neuro Critical Care Unit. While in there she underwent two surgery’s to remove two blood clots. One blood clot removed from her brain, and the other from the carotid artery in the neck, at least five of each, MRI’s, CT scans, and ultrasounds. On the fifth day they inserted a feeding tube.

The aftermath of the stroke were loss of speech, complete movement of the right side of her body, and a little bit of memory loss and confusion.

I spent every single day with her in the hospital only going home to sleep at nights, until about day nine when she was finally transferred to a rehab hospital.

How Do I Encourage Myself In the Lord?

This is the last picture I have with my mom before her stroke. It’s from three years ago at my baby shower

As I write this, she is still at the rehab hospital. She will stay there for two weeks and then I will be able to bring her home.

During these last almost three weeks I have experienced a myriad of emotions. Fear, overwhelm, sadness, mourning the loss of the independent life my mom has lived, regret, and even peace. The kind of peace only God can give, a peace that surpasses all understanding.

I don’t know what life is going to look like for her or myself once I bring her home. She will require a lot of care at least for the first few months. There will be a lot of doctors appointments, and a lot more rehab that needs to happen, as well as daily living care.

I will be the primary person in charge of making sure she’s taken care of and getting her to all appointments, all while caring for my own family of five and making sure all my grandmas needs are being met as well…..remember my mom was her primary care taker. Thankfully my aunt will soon be here to take over grandmas care, and for that, I am thankful.

I don’t share this to call for pity. I do it because I want to share the many ways I have found courage in the Lord.

The verses He has spoken through to fill me with hope and peace in the midst of uncertainty and life’s afflictions. The uplifting quotes friends have shared with me. The prayers that have been prayed. They all have been a needed form of encouragement during this trying time.

Bible Verses To Encourage Yourself In The Lord

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10

This is the first verse the Lord gave me in the early days after my mom’s stroke. It filled me with joy and peace because I truly felt like He was speaking directly to me at one of the lowest points of my life this far.

“If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, nothing will be impossible for you.” -Matthew 17:20

Matthew 17:20 the verse of the mustard seed, is actually one of my favorite verses. This necklace (which I wear everyday) reminds me on a daily basis to hold on to my faith, even on days, or should I say “especially” on days when it feels hopeless.

I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. -Galatians 2:20 ESV

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me.” Psalm 23:1-4

Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” Psalm 91:14-16

With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” -Matthew 19:26

A Prayer For Healing

This prayer was shared by one of my best friends. I am not sure who wrote it but it holds so many promises of God that we need to remember and hold on to.

If you are not in need of healing prayer, feel free to kip over it since it is a rather long prayer.

I wholeheartedly believe that nothing is impossible for God, and by the power of His mighty hand, with faith, there is healing to be had for those who ask.

This is a BOLD prayer! Dear brothers and sisters, pray it with FAITH!

Encourage Yourself in the Lord Closing Thoughts

What or who would you say your enemies are?

How about Fear?

Anxiety?

Mistrust?

Overwhelm?

Despair?

Let me remind you friend, none of those things are from the Lord.

Reject them.

Don’t allow them to take up any space in your being.

Instead hold on to what IS from the Lord….

Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, kindness, goodness, and faithfulness.

Submerge yourself in God’s word and in prayer and you too will experience a peace that surpasses all understanding, just as I have during this time of sorrow after my moms stroke.

I sincerely hope my writing this helps at least one person out there who is facing what may seem like an impossible reality.

I have so many angel friends and family who have sustained me with prayer. Their prayers and help with meals and many other things through this time have meant the world to me. I could cry a puddle of tears, and actually have, just thinking about the love that surrounds my family.
