Life sometimes presents us with unexpected challenges, and for my family, one such challenge was when my mom suffered a stroke a little over a year ago. In those uncertain and difficult times, we turned to the power of prayer, seeking comfort and believing in the possibility of her miraculous healing.

In this blog post, I invite you to walk alongside me as I write down our journey – the trials we faced, the moments of fear, but most importantly, the incredible moments of healing and renewal that strengthened our faith in the power of prayer.

I want to tell you our story so that if you’re going through something similar, it might give you hope and make you feel stronger. Sometimes, knowing that others have been through tough times like yours can make you feel better.

The Day Everything Changed

That sunny December day was really hard.  My mom, who was only 57, had a stroke. I remember feeling a mixture of emotions all at once,  fear, shock, and disbelief just to name a few.

My mom who raised me and my sister as a single mom had been the pillar of strength all my life, and suddenly, she seemed so fragile and vulnerable.  I remember the rush to the hospital, the blur of medical staff. In those moments, a prayer formed quietly in my heart, a plea to the almighty God, the great physician I knew could work miracles. Dear Lord, in Jesus’ name, touch my mom with your healing hands, I prayed silently. It was a test of faith, but deep down, I believed in His loving care, in His power to restore my mom’s health, and in the miraculous healing only He could provide. This belief became the foundation of our journey ahead, a journey towards her full recovery and the long life I saw for her, basking in Jesus’ loving arms.

How the Stroke Changed My Moms Life and Ours

The stroke  changed my mom’s life and ours a lot.

A stroke is what happens when blood flow to part of the brain stops. This causes big, long-lasting problems. Suddenly, my mom, who used to be so lively and independent, had trouble speaking and moving the right side of her body. It wasn’t just her body that was affected; it was hard for her to talk and think like before. For us, her family, it meant dealing with a new reality. We had to learn how to take care of her every day, going to lots of doctor appointments and therapy sessions. Seeing her struggle was tough, but she showed us how strong she was. It brought us closer together but also made us realize how fragile we all are. Through everything, our faith helped us stay hopeful and strong on this difficult journey.

Becoming a Caretaker

I’m no stranger to being a caretaker. My husband and I took care of his elderly mom for the last few years of her life.

But it’s very different being a caretaker to an elderly person than it is to someone who from one day to the next needs their needs met. To become an “unexpected caretaker” if that makes sense.

Taking care of my mom after her stroke was really hard. It was a big challenge every day, teaching me patience and strength. It wasn’t just about being physically strong but also emotionally strong. I had to manage her many many appointments with doctors and therapy sessions, helping her with every day things like showering and getting dressed. Just every day things that she couldn’t do for herself in the first few months after the stroke.

and all of that plus taking care of my own family of five at home. I wouldn’t have gotten through that difficult time without my sweet husband, and the daily prayer messages from my family ( I have an angel for an aunt) my ladies bible study group and my best friend.

Bible Verses for Strength and Comfort

Of course my main source of strength came from reading God’s word. When we feel sad or scared, we read the Bible. Its words gives us hope and strength. It’s like a light guiding us through tough times.

Here are some of the Bible verses that continue to get me through this journey with my moms physical healing:

  • Isaiah 41:10 – ‘So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I willstrengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ This verse reminds us that we’re never alone,Making our belief in God’s constant help stronger.
  • James 5:15 – ‘And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raisethem up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.’ It highlights the power of prayer, emphasizing its potential to heal both physically and spiritually.
  • Philippians 4:13 – ‘I can do all this through him who gives me strength.’ This shows that we believe in God’s strength, which helps us face challenges with new energy and hope.

These verses, along with many more, are like our spiritual weapons. They help us face our problems with bravery and a strong belief in God’s plans for us.

A Healing Prayer For My Mom To Get Better

As I pray for my mom’s healing, I feel sincerity in my heart. This prayer isn’t like any other; it’s a deep request to God, the great healer. With a whisper voice, I ask  Abba Father to heal her. Every word I say is full of faith, showing how powerful prayer can be. It’s been a long journey and there’s more ahead, so I don’t just ask for her pain to go away. I specifically ask for her speech, movement, and thinking to improve.

I end my prayer with “In Jesus’ name” not just because it’s tradition, but because I truly believe Jesus has the power to heal. This part is really important, because Jesus is where we find true health and recovery. It’s a simple prayer from a loving child to our heavenly father, asking for a miracle that only Jesus can make happen.

Dear Father God,

Please help my mom to get better after her stroke. Give her strength and courage as she goes through this. Heal her body and mind, heal her speech, movement of her right arm and leg, and thinking. Guide the doctors and nurses who are taking care of her, and give them wisdom to make the best decisions for her health. Give me wisdom and dicernment as well as I make medical decisions on her behalf.

Lord Jesus, we believe in your power to heal. In your name, we ask for a miracle to bring about her full health and recovery. Comfort her in her times of struggle and give her peace knowing that you are with her every step of the way.

Thank you for your love and care for my mom.

In the precious name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

This is a very simple and specific prayer for my mom. If you need help getting started I shared this prayer that my best friend sent me when my mom was still in the hospital. It gave me the words I needed when I just didn’t know how to pray. When I was deep in grief and fear.

How Jesus Tells Us To Pray

Jesus teaches us the importance of sincere and humble prayer. He warns against praying just to show off or impress others, like the Pharisees did. Instead, Jesus encourages us to pray in private, where we can speak honestly and openly with God. He tells us that God sees what is done in secret and rewards those who pray with genuine hearts.  Matthew 6:5-6

When we pray, Jesus wants us to focus on our personal relationship with God, rather than seeking the approval of others. He wants sincerity of our prayers over outward appearance. By praying in private, we can speak from the deepest part of our hearts, sharing our joys, sorrows, hopes, and fears with God alone. Matthew 6:6

In the end, Jesus teaches us that prayer is not about impressing others or following rules. It’s about connecting with God in a real and true way, trusting that He hears and cares for us. God listens to us when we speak from our hearts, and that’s what matters most. Matthew 6:7-8

Asking Others To Pray

Don’t be afaid to call on your community  to pray for the healing of a loved one. If you attend a church ask the elders of the church to come and lay hands over your mom’s body or your loved one in time of illness.

Have family and friends pray not only over the person in need of healing but also for the hands of the surgeons and hospital staff taking care of your loved one.

Ask them to pray for you and your family. That you as the caretaker may stay in good health, for your anxious broken heart, for new strength and spiritual renewal every day as you walk through this.

For your own family at home, especially if you have young kids at home like I do, that they are okay in your absence.

Celebrating Small Wins

Every little step my mom takes forward is a big win in her getting better. These moments show how powerful heartfelt prayer is, how much God loves us, and how strong people can be. I write all of this so I can remember where we started and how far we have come. It’s like a light of hope, reminding us of how much God helps us. my mom is slowly becoming herself again, thanks to God’s help and the hard work from my mom. These small wins remind us that with God’s love and our sincere powerful prayers in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, healing happens!

God’s Healing Touch

In this long journey, I’ve learned to trust in God’s support, even though I can’t always see it or feel it. I see God’s healing in my mom, along with the work of the doctors and therapists. Sometimes, when someone is sick, we forget about God’s healing power because we focus on the facts from medical professionals. But it’s in these hard times that we see how strong faith can bring miraculous healing.

My mom’s body getting stronger again reminds me of the power of prayer and how strong people can be. Our prayers, the support of her family, the work she puts into her recovery and her team of doctors working together show how God and people can make amazing things happen.

God keeps guiding us through this healing journey and gives us strength through His words in the Bible. Verses about being healthy and living a long life give us hope when things are tough. With each little win, we see how much God loves us. We believe my mom will fully recover, knowing that Jesus’ powerful name brings real healing. Even though we sometimes still struggle with  sadness, we’re hopeful because we know that God’s love will heal my mom, bringing her back to life and renewing her spirit.

Going through this hard time has shown me how important prayer is and how much God loves us. I already knew this but it has served as a great reminder.

 Final Thoughts

As I look back on this journey of faith, hope, and healing, I’m amazed by how much God has helped us. Every little step forward shows His love and the power of prayer. Even though there might still be tough times ahead, I’m confident that God is helping my mom get better every day. I remember what it says in the Bible in Psalm 30:2, “Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me.” I hope our story gives hope to others going through a similar situation. With faith, love, and God’s help, healing really happens!
