Easter: A National Holiday

Easter is a Christian Holiday in which the Christian faith celebrates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

The gospel of Christ as written in the Bible tells of God’s great love and mercy for His creation.

The Easter Holiday is a full week long celebration, called Holy Week.

The Celebration of Easter

It begins the week before Easter Sunday, which is known as Palm Sunday.

Palm Sunday is the remembrance day of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem, rinding on a colt.

The people laid palm branches before Him; a custom at the time done for important leaders.

The next important day during Holy Week is Thursday (also known as Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday).

On this day Jesus celebrated the passover feast with His disciples. He ate the last supper and washed the disciples feet. This is also the night when Judas Iscariot betrayed him and was arrested later that night.

Good Friday follows and is the day when Jesus goes through a short trial that ends with a conviction of death on the cross. Before His crucifixion Jesus was stripped of His clothes and flogged by Roman soldiers; they placed a crown of thorns on His head and was then forced to carry His cross to Golgotha, the place where he would be crucified.

Jesus died Friday afternoon. At the time of His death there was a great earthquake and darkness fell over the land. He was buried that same day as was custom.

On Easter morning is when the women who went to His tomb discovered He had risen form the dead. The story of Easter tells of Jesus’ great sacrifice. It tells of His death on the cross and victorious resurrection! Giving everyone who wants to partake, a way to eternal salvation.

Make reading the complete Easter story part of your family traditions during the Easter season. Just like you would advent bible stories reading during the Christmas season.
