History of Cinco de Mayo: a Mexican holiday
Although most people in the United States believe the Cinco de Mayo holiday celebrates Mexico’s independence day that is actually not the case.
Mexico won their independence from Spain on September 16th, 1821.
The Cinco de Mayo celebration of Mexico is the victory of the Mexican army over the French forces in the battle of Puebla. Forty years after their independence from Spain. Puebla is a state located on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
This was a very unexpected victory by Mexico because the French army doubled in size that of the Mexican army. The victory of the battle of Puebla fueled the Mexican peoples pride and patriotism!
Today, Cinco de Mayo is mostly celebrated in the state of Puebla. The rest of Mexico observes the holiday.
Here in the United States, the holiday has turned into a day to celebrate the richness of the Mexican culture. Especially in the southern states that border Mexico; Texas, California, Arizona, New Mexico. The celebrations might include eating Mexican food, mariachi music, and red white and green decorations; the colors of the Mexican flag.
