After raising three boys, I’ve learned that you really don’t need a giant bookshelf full of children’s books. A handful of good ones that your little one loves hearing over and over again can be just as special.

When choosing books for babies, I tend to look for a few things: sturdy pages, colorful pictures, simple wording, repetition, and something that gives baby a reason to interact with the book.

If you’re looking for a book that will actually keep those little hands busy, Poke-A-Dot books are so much fun.
The books have colorful pictures and interactive dots that babies can press as you read. Once they figure out how to poke the dots themselves, they get especially excited about it.
I love books like this because you’re not just reading the words. You’re giving your baby something to touch, look at, and participate in.
That’s Not My Bear
This is such a sweet little sensory book for babies.
Each page has a different texture for your baby to touch and explore while you read the simple story. The pictures are colorful without being overwhelming, and the repetition makes it easy for little ones to start anticipating what comes next. This book is just as much about exploring as it is about reading.
Where Is Baby’s Belly Button?
This is another fun interactive book that babies love.
Each page has a flap to lift as you search for different parts of baby’s body. It gives you plenty of opportunities to interact with your little one while you’re reading.
One little warning from a mom who has been through this before: the flaps don’t always survive babyhood. Those little hands can be surprisingly strong!
But even if you eventually have a book missing a flap or two, the fun of reading it together makes it worth having.

I don’t think a list of favorite baby books is complete without including a little Bible storybook.

I love having books like this around from the very beginning. They may not understand all the words yet, but those early moments of hearing Bible stories, praying together, and learning about God’s love are precious.

This is one of the sweetest books. Make sure you don’t just read it straight through! Make your baby giggle when you get to the parts about their smiles and laughter. Those little interactions are what make a book like this so special.
Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Brown Bear, Brown Bear is a classic for a reason. We’ve love it for years. In fact we’ve gone through three copies in our house because we read it so much it usually does’nt survive the next child.
The bright colors, simple pictures, and repetitive wording make it especially fun for babies and toddlers. As they get older it’s one of those books that can grow with your child. A baby will enjoy looking at the pictures, while a toddler can start “reading” parts of it along with you.
Welcome To The World
This is such a darling book to have when you’re celebrating the arrival of a new baby.
It follows a little elephant discovering all the wonderful things the world has to offer, and the message is especially sweet for welcoming a new little one. It would make a lovely baby shower gift.
The only downside? It’s not a board book, so I’d keep it for reading together rather than letting a baby who is still in the “everything goes straight into my mouth” stage explore it on their own.
The Best Bedtime Books for Babies And Toddlers
The best bedtime books are the ones your little one starts to recognize as part of the nightly routine.
These two have become favorites in our home.
Goodnight Moon
If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t think I was going to like this book.
I originally bought it as a last-minute add-on because there was some kind of buy-three-get-one-free deal on amazon. I knew it was supposed to be a classic, but it just never really appealed to me.
And then I read it and somehow, it became one of our all-time favorites.
There’s something so calm and cozy about the simple words and pictures. It’s just the kind of book that feels right when everyone is winding down for the night.
Sometimes the books you don’t expect to love end up becoming the ones you reach for again and again.
I Love You To The Moon And Back
This is another beautiful book for ending the day with your little one.
The story follows a mama bear and her cub as they talk about all the ways they love each other. It’s sweet without being complicated, which is exactly what I want in a bedtime book.
And honestly, there is something special about ending the day by reminding your child just how loved they are.
What to Look for When Choosing Books for Babies
When I’m choosing books for little ones, I like to look for:
Sturdy pages. Board books are especially helpful during the stage when babies want to grab, chew, and turn every page themselves.
Simple stories. Babies don’t need long, complicated stories. A few simple words and familiar pictures are more than enough.
Repetition. Repetitive books are wonderful because your baby eventually starts to recognize what comes next.
Bright, interesting pictures. Babies love looking at faces, animals, colors, and simple pictures.
Interactive elements. Flaps, textures, sounds, and things they can touch give little ones another way to engage with the book.
Books you actually enjoy reading. This one might be the most important. If you hate reading a particular book for the hundredth time, it’s probably not going to become a favorite in your house!
How to Make Reading Part of Your and Baby’s Routine
You don’t need to set aside an hour every day for reading.
Read one book after breakfast. Keep a couple of books in the rocking chair and read one before nap time. And of course, bedtime is a natural place to make reading part of your routine.
As your baby gets older, you may find that they start bringing books to you. That’s one of my favorite parts. There is something pretty adorable about a toddler handing you their favorite book and climbing into your lap because they want you to read it again.
And again.
And again.
Embrace it, mama. Those days really do go by quickly.
How Many Baby Books Do You Really Need?
If you’re trying to keep your home from becoming overrun with stuff, you don’t need a huge collection of baby books.
A small basket of books that you actually love and read together is plenty.
You can rotate books as your baby grows, borrow books from the library, and slowly add a few favorites to your home library.
Some of our children’s books have been loved for years, while others were quickly forgotten. That’s okay!
The goal is to create a home where books are enjoyed, conversations happen, and little ones learn that reading is something we do together.

After three boys, I’ve learned that the books themselves are only part of what makes reading special.
