Balancing Faith and Fun Traditions at Easter

Growing up in Mexico, I remember spending Easter week with family….because in Mexico you celebrate Holy Week .

There was no Easter Bunny, no egg hunts, and no Easter baskets full of candy. So, when I moved to the U.S. and saw all the pastel-colored things, it was all new to me.

What did a bunny and painted eggs have to do with Jesus rising from the dead? It honestly didn’t make much sense to me, but at the time, it wasn’t something I gave too much thought.

That changed when I got married and had kids. Suddenly, I was faced with the question: how would we celebrate Easter as a family?

My mother in law couldn’t believe it when I said I wasn’t planning to do the whole Easter Bunny thing. To her, it was as much a part of Easter as Christmas trees are to Christmas.

Family gatherings became interesting, to say the least! My husbands family would lovingly tease me about being “anti-Easter Bunny,” and I’d laugh along, but I stayed firm in my decision to not include the bunny in our intimate family celebration.

With that said, I’ve never judged anyone for celebrating Easter with all the fun traditions.

In fact, I let my boys take part in the way my husband’s family celebrated, with egg hunts and baskets full of goodies. I wanted them to experience the joy of being with family, and those moments always brought smiles to their faces. But at home, my husband and I kept Easter simple and focused on its true meaning—Jesus’ sacrifice, His resurrection, and the hope He brings.

It wasn’t always easy to balance cultural traditions with my personal convictions, but I’m so glad we found a way to honor both. For me, the heart of Easter has always been, and always will be, about Jesus.

Simple Holy Week Timeline for Kids

Palm Sunday – Jesus Enters Jerusalem

People welcomed Jesus like a king, waving palm branches and shouting, “Hosanna!”

Monday – Jesus Clears the Temple

Jesus went to the temple and saw people using it to make money. He cleared it out because God’s house should be a place of prayer.

Tuesday – Jesus Teaches at the Temple

Jesus spent time teaching people about God, love, and faith.

Wednesday – A Quiet Day and a Secret Plan

This was a quieter day, but the chief priests who didn’t like Jesus made a plan to have Him arrested.

Thursday (Maundy Thursday) – The Last Supper

Jesus had a special dinner with His disciples, where He shared bread and wine and washed their feet to show love and humility. This is the night Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus.

Friday (Good Friday) – Jesus Dies on the Cross

Jesus was arrested and put on trial. The soldiers made fun of Him by putting a crown of thorns on His head to hurt Him and mock Him, calling Him “King.”

They also put a sign on the cross that said, “King of the Jews.”

They did this to make fun of Him, but what they didn’t know was that Jesus really is the King!

Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for our sins because He loves us so much. Even though it’s sad, this was part of God’s plan to save us.

Saturday – A Day of Waiting

Jesus’ body was placed in a tomb. His friends were very sad and didn’t understand what would happen next.

Sunday (Easter Sunday) – Jesus is Alive!

When the women went to visit Jesus’ tomb, they found it empty. An angel told them, “He is not here; He has risen!” Jesus was alive, and that’s why we celebrate Easter!

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who believes in me shall never die” Do you believe this? She said to Him, “Yes Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” John 11:25-26 ESV

These verses remind us that Jesus is the resurrection and the life, giving us eternal life. Even in tough times, this verse gives us hope for a fresh start, just like when Jesus raised Lazarus back to life.

“But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” Matthew 28:5-6 ESV

These verses are full of joy when the angel tells the women that Jesus is alive!  It’s a moment that fills our hearts with excitement as we realize Jesus kept His promise.

“And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” Mark 16:15 ESV

Mark reminds us to share the good news of Jesus’ resurrection with others. We are all called to tell people about God’s love and the life of Jesus. Easter is the perfect time to reflect on this joy and feel inspired to share it with others.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” 1 Peter 1:3 ESV

This verse celebrates the hope we have because of Jesus’ resurrection. It tells us that through His mercy, we’ve been given a fresh start and a living hope that lasts forever. No matter what, our hope is alive and strong because of Jesus.

“Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29 ESV

Jesus speaks to Thomas after He rises from the dead and shows Himself to His disciples. This verse reminds us that even though we can’t physically see Jesus, we are blessed when we believe in Him. Faith in Jesus, even without seeing, brings us closer to Him.

“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” Colossians 3:1 ESV

This verse reminds us that because Jesus rose from the dead, we have new life too. It encourages us to focus on Jesus and His promises instead of getting caught up in things that don’t last. It’s a reminder to keep our hearts focused on eternity.
